Recently, I have been researching natural personal care products. Some have been good, others not so much. However, this simple recipe is one of the best skin scrubs I have ever used and I use it everyday. Great for all skin complexions, it is especially beneficial for dry complexions or for people suffering with eczema. Containing the power of essential oils lavender and peppermint, lavender is a cell regenerator and reduces signs of aging and peppermint is an anti-inflammatory with moisturizing properties. Oatmeal is a super power for your skin due to the proteins in oatmeal helping to maintain skins natural protective barrier. Oatmeal is also calming and pore cleansing. Even after the first application my skin felt super soft and fresh.
Not only does it work, it is inexpensive and you control the ingredients thus avoiding nasty chemicals hidden in personal care products. In the past I have used St. Ives Apricot scrub so I decided to take a look at the EWG's Skin Deep Cosmetics Database (http://www.ewg.org/) and get it rated for health concerns of it's ingredients. According to EWG, this product rates high for health concern (http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/product/25968/St._Ives_Apricot_Scrub%2C_Gentle_for_Sensitive_Skin/).
So here is the recipe to make your own natural scrub:
Lavender Peppermint Oatmeal Scrub
- 3 tbsps of oatmeal
- 6 drops lavender oil
- 2 drops peppermint or spearmint oil
- 1 tbsp dried flowers (lavender, rose, chamomile - optional)
Grind dry ingredients in an electric coffee grinder. Add essential oils and stir very well to distribute. Store in a closed container to keep moisture out. To use scrub moisten 1 tsp with water to make a paste. Gently scrub and rinse with warm water. You can also use in your shower. Before you turn off your shower scoop a small handful of scrub into your hand. Rub gently onto your skin. Rinse. Use daily instead of soap. Only takes 2 minutes to whip up.
