Our family always keeps a fresh fruit bowl on our kitchen counter that never stays filled long. But unfortunately last week a couple of juicy black plums brought home some unwanted visitors. Luckily, I remembered reading details on how to make a natural fruit fly trap. So I put it to the test and it actually works surprisingly well!
Grab a small container or jar, I used a ramekin. Pour in a couple of inches of apple cider vinegar and a drop or two of dish soap and stir. Cover the container with plastic wrap held in place with an elastic band and poke holes in the plastic wrap. Place near the fruit that is attracting the flies. Apparently, the fruit flies are attracted to the smell of the vinegar, and will attempt to land on its surface but the dish soap breaks the surface tension of the vinegar and the fruit flies drown. My husband wanted me to also try this approach without the plastic wrap to take an even more "green" cost effective approach and it works just as well even without the plastic wrap.

Some Tips to Prevent Fruit Flies:
- Use all overripe fruit quickly.
- Clean fruits with all natural veggie wash.
- Put away all the "sweet stuff" in you home such as open containers of fruit juice and all vinegar based products such as ketchup.
- Keep your kitchen clean of spills and food crumbs.
- Take out your kitchen compost and keep your collection bin covered.
- Use screens for your doors and windows.
- Store trash in a covered bin and do not place food garbage into waste-paper baskets around the house.
