It is hard to fathom that more than 100 million trees and 28 billion gallons of water are used each year to produce junk mail. According to RedDotCampaign.ca, 67% of Canadians are not interested in the catalogues, flyers and ads that are delivered and 25% of us throw them out without even opening them. What a waste of our natural resources, time and energy. Largely due to deforestation, junk mail manufacturing creates as much greenhouse gas emissions annually as 3.7 million cars!
Post a No Junk Mail Sign: For unaddressed junk mail, like flyers and catalogues, your best bet is to put a no junk mail sign on the inside lip/flap of your mailbox. Addressed Junk Mail: Unfortunately, there is still a lot of junk mail that has our names on it due to purchased mailing lists. My biggest pet peeve is all the credit card applications which never seem to end. To end them follow these simple steps: Tear off the part of the application that has your name and address on it. Print 'Do Not Solicit' and sign your name and date. Put it in the prepaid Business Reply Mail (BRM) envelope and mail it. By Canadian law, they are required to, and reputable companies will stop soliciting you.
Remove your name from the Direct Marketing Association of Canada: Canada's largest marketing group which uses a wide variety of ways to reach consumers with information on their products and services.

Be Proactive: When you order over the phone make your preferences known to the operator taking the call that you do not wish to have your information given to third parties. Whenever you donate money, order a product or service, or fill out a warranty card, write in large letters, "Please do not sell my name or address". Most organizations will properly mark your name in the computer. Credit card companies are probably the worst offenders by selling your name the most often. Call them and ask them to stop. I reduce the junk mail coming into our home by taking 2 minutes to call the company and have my name added to their do not mail list.
