Have you been to the library lately? Today's libraries are truly a special gift to our communities. Libraries offer something that can appeal to everyone and utilizing the library is a fun way to be eco-friendly and save money. So why visit your local public library?
- Selection - Libraries have a great selection and do their best to continuously add new books, music, magazines and DVD's. Just think for a moment about the amount of money you have spent on all of these items this year. It adds up! Borrowing from the library can save you loads of money.
- Convenience - People with busy schedules don't necessary want to dig through the shelves at the library for the exact movie or book that they are looking for. Well you don't have to. Most libraries including New Brunswick libraries have a web enabled online catalog that you can use to search and put a hold on a title. When it is ready for pickup the library will call or email you. Libraries are also flexible on return times as well. In the past, I have had a book checked out for 6 weeks due to my busy schedule. Eventually I did finish the book and I was glad the library allowed for that flexibility. Due date reminders are also delivered via email and you can re-check out online.
- Environmental Impacts - Borrowing is great for our planet by reducing waste by reusing items. It is also great for your home by creating less clutter and less trash. Remember to donate any books you no longer need to the library. When I do happen to buy a book because I am traveling and need something in a pinch I always donate it to a friend or to the library. That way I recycle and give the library a book which saves them money.
- Audio Books and E-Books - Try downloading audio books and e-books which are offered by libraries. Not to mention most libraries offer computer access and free wifi.
- Special Events & Programs - Lots of special events and programs are offered at the local library here such as "Gaming in the Library" where you can playing either traditional board games or Xbox Kinnect, used book sales and children's programs such as the "Travelling Suitcase", which helps children prepare for a hospital visit by borrowing the suitcase containing books, a DVD and exposure to other items found in hospitals.
- Classes, Clubs and Groups - Libraries offer a dizzying amount of classes, clubs and groups for kids, teens and adults. For kids you can find story time, science classes and crafts. For adults, language classes, computer classes and art classes. Join a book club or special interest group! These are a great way to get out and meet new people, learn new things and have a great time. For example, there are groups such as the "Current Event Discussion Group", "Boomers, Books and Beans", "Babies in the Library", summer book and quilting clubs and much more. Check with your local library for listings and times.
Cost Savings: Depending on how often you use the library, a family of four can save at least $150-$200 per year if each member of the family borrowed 4 books at the library instead of buying them. If you borrowed DVDs, CDs and audio books this savings would be even higher.
